"One day you might look up and see me playing at fifty. Oh, don't laugh. Never say never. Because limits, like fears, are often just an illusion"
Michael Jordan said this words at the end of his Hall of Fame enshrinement speech. On the following video you can listen to that part.

On this occasion, when MJ got fifty years old, it was not necessary that he played the game again. In my opinion, people knew that he could have done if he had set his mind and body to it. He was not challenged enough this time, because if people had doubted of him, he would probe they were wrong. So when the time arrived he was not on his best shape, he has some weight on, and he wasn't prepared.
The oldest player ever to play in the NBA was Nat Hickey who played one game in the 1947–48 season when he was 45 years and 363 days old. He was a white man like it corresponds to the usual profile of a basketball player all those years ago. In US there was divisiveness even when Pete Maravich played his first professional games. In recent times, Kevin Willis was the oldest to play in the NBA. He played at the age of 44 and 224 days his last game. I remember him very clearly, a black tall strong man with a skull face and a bald head. He was not a star but did his part.
Michael Jordan also played until he was 40 years old. He still scored a lot of points at that age. Who knows if in the future a player will receive the baton leaved by "Air" Jordan, and flooded by his spirit, wins a NBA championship ring at the age of fifty.
